Sara Maxwell, CMLA (AMT)

Growing up, I would organize whatever toys of mine I could find. I grouped them by color or shape. I grouped my blocks by color, built towers of Legos that were the same shape, and alphabetized my books. This organization helped make finding whatever I needed easier.

I carried my organizational skills into my lab technician job where I washed and organized different types of glassware. Like my younger self with my books and toys, I organized the glassware so my coworkers could easily find what they needed to complete their work in a timely manner. Later in my job I was given additional responsibilities on helping keep the lab organized. These included taking inventory of chemicals and glassware so I could let the team know what needed to be replaced. I was also tasked with updating the records of liquid chromatography columns.

At the end of each year, I put my organizational skills to use when helping take inventory of our controlled batches. I also helped count the amounts of pharmaceuticals in each new arrival. More recently I have been focusing on my organization in my volunteer work, cleaning out weeds and dead heads on flowers.

Working as a clinical lab assistant will give me more opportunities to further improve my organizational skills when handling and testing different kinds of specimens.
